Lost In Us by Layla Hagen - ARC Review

Serena has learned to live with her past, locking her secrets and nightmares deep inside her. But when her boyfriend of six years abruptly leaves her, she’s catapulted back into pain, nursing a broken heart. When indulging in mountains of chocolate doesn’t work, Serena decides the best way to deal with her shattered heart is to indulge in something else. A rebound . . .

The night she swaps her usual Sprite for tequila, she meets James. The encounter is breathtaking.

Electrifying.

And best not repeated.

James is a successful entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. A man who has amassed a fortune by taking risks. A man who has shunned commitment completely, and still does. He’s the exact opposite of Serena. But sometimes opposites attract. Sometimes they give in to burning passion. Sometimes opposites are perfect for each other.

James is everything her damaged soul could want. His kisses are intoxicating, his touch out of this world. He makes her forget. He grants her peace from her pain. But as they grow closer, Serena discovers she isn’t the only one with a past. James carries the scars of a past much darker than hers. One that has left him damaged, hurt, and wary of love. A past that gives him the power to shatter her.

Now James and Serena must find a way to mend one another. Or risk losing each other forever.

I had no idea what to expect from this novel because it comes from a fairly unknown author and this is her debut book. But, she sure did a great job!

Serena is a broken soul that wants to be loved, but believes she doesn't deserve so. She is too afraid of coming out of her safe place and she doesn't have the courage to risk anything for love. I was kinda frustrated with her sometimes, she was so selfish, but then I remembered how broken and scared she was. I bet people would do the same in her situation, I don't know.

"Nothing but another broken soul could be perfect for me."

James is a rich man who likes to take risks. He's the exact opposite of Serena.. But even though he is confident, he has his own demons. He has his own scars, but if Serena let him, he'd build a better world for her. One enough for her, one where she truly belonged to.

"Dreams show you who you are. Fears show you who you don't want to be."

"Losing someone we love shapes us, punches us in the gut until we bend and break, But, we must never let that pain define us."

James and Serena are pretty hot when they are together. He makes her forget. They can help the other heal their damaged souls, but yet again they afraid of love. I think James is nothing but honest with Serena, that's why I got frustrated with her so many times I lost count! I mean, I know they both  felt guilty about what happened in their past, but his actions clearly showed his feelings. The chocolate factory and the balloons thing? please, he's so damn sweet. Why did she need to hear those three words to feel whole?

"Two broken souls cannot heal one another. They will devour, shatter each other until there's nothing left of either of them."

"It's the first time I spend more time thinking of someone else that I do of myself. And it feels damn good."

Will Serena and James lose each other forever? Or will they find way to mend one another? Lost in Us is a story of two damaged souls afraid of love and I dare you to read their story. It's fill with love, drama and frustration. My emotions were all over the place but like I said, it's worth the ride! I just hope there is a 2nd book. I can not wait to read what Layla has in store for us!
