Madison Miller is broken. Everyone she’s loved throughout her life has left her in one way or another. Her father died when she was ten years old. Her mother left to return to Spain. Now she’s watching her only brother’s casket descend into the ground after a fatal accident. Plus her boyfriend since the sixth grade is dumping her for “not being enough”.
Madison escapes from the funeral, heading to a hotel bar to drown her sorrows. There she meets a stranger who awakens something inside of her. He helps her forget that life is a series of losses. For one night she gains someone to care for her. In those stolen moments, nothing else matters. The next morning, though, all she can feel is guilt, so she slips away without saying goodbye.
Madison is devoted to those she loves and would do anything for her family. She finds herself moving back home when her brother’s widow needs help caring for their seven-year-old daughter. Little does she know, she will soon face the biggest challenge of her life.
In the near future, fate will have their paths cross again, and the question will be whether this complicated but caring woman can convince this distrustful and disillusioned man to believe in falling in love for the first time in his life. Will passion and desire be enough to surmount all of life’s obstacles, or will the threat of heartache and overwhelming responsibility keep these two lovers apart forever?
What made you want to become a writer?
There wasn’t a specific event that made me want to become a writer. I read a few hundred books in a short period of time, and while most of them were excellent, none of them turned out exactly the way I wanted. I had so many ideas in my head, I had to start writing as a brain dump. Once I realized I might actually have something, I decided to go for it.
What is your favorite/least favorite part about writing?
My favorite part about writing is the amazing people I’ve met throughout this process: readers, editors, designers, photographers, promoters, other writers. I have made so many new friends. The indie author and reading community is awesome.
My least favorite part about writing is waiting. Why can’t things be finished in 5 minutes? lol
What gave you the inspiration to write your first book?
Never to Keep started out as a simple idea about a male teacher who tutored a kid with a single mother. I’d actually started writing another story, but these characters wouldn’t shut up until I let them go first.
Can you give us three random facts about Never to Keep?
1. Ethan was the hardest character to name. His previous names included Trent, Kyle, Brian, and Derek.
2. There is one character in the book that I didn’t physically describe at all. I take that back—I described him once or twice as being hot. I didn’t intend for it to be that way, it just happened. I don’t think anyone who has read it even noticed until I mentioned it to them. It’s interesting to hear about how they picture him while they are reading.
3. The first scene I wrote was about Madison going to the school after hours to meet Sawyer for a parent/teacher meeting. The scene changed significantly since the first draft, but I refused to cut it because it was the first.
What is your favorite scene from Never to Keep?
There’s a scene toward the middle of the book where they are playing touch football in the park. I really like it because everyone is happy and having fun.
What’s one random/weird fact about you?
I have a degree in Accounting and balance checkbooks for fun.
Who is your favorite author and what are you currently reading?
There are so many authors that I love. I always buy Kristin Proby’s With Me in Seattle books on release day. I also love S.H. Kolee, Teresa Mummert, H.M. Ward, Sylvia Day, Laramie Briscoe, Jade C. Jamison, and many, many others.
I’m currently reading Finger Bang by Jade C. Jamison.
What can we expect from you in the future?
I have several other stories in my head. I’m hopeful I can get Marina and Tate’s story, Marinate, finished by early next year.
